KUCHING: To be among the top three utilities and a regional renewable energy powerhouse, Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) will continue to stress health, safety, security and environment (HSSE) excellence in its organisation.

SEB’s Group chief executive officer Datuk Sharbini Suhaili said that in SEB’s own transformation over the last decade required the organisation to take steps to cultivate the HSSE culture, encouraging people at all levels to take ownership of HSSE matters regardless of their individual roles or their levels in the organisation.

“This has allowed us to become one of the leading companies for HSSE stewardship in Sarawak and Southeast Asia as a whole.

“We have taken a multi-pronged approach to HSSE in SEB, implementing the capability development for our health, safety and environment or HSE officers in the relevant competencies, continuous HSE in-house training, coaching, forums and awareness programmes, and regular stakeholder engagement for our projects, to keep all of them informed by opening lines of communication,” he said.

He was speaking during the Sarawak Energy Excellence Award 2023 at Pullman Hotel here, yesterday (July 15).

In the meantime, he also said SEB’s contractors have played a significant part of its journey and are strongly involved in many of the initiatives and programmes mentioned.

“Their consistent compliance with all HSSE-related regulations, legislations and rules have also been key in making SEB a safe and greater place to work.

“From aligning with Sarawak Energy life saving rules to the monitoring of their respective HSE footprints, our contractors have willingly done what is required to them,” he added.

Regardless, Sharbini said for them in SEB, there are sill areas for improvement and gaps to be close when it comes to the HSSE Excellence.

“There is no room for complacency in HSSE, thus continued vigilance is necessary.

“Commit ourselves to continuous improvement, search for new ways to enhance our respective HSE management capabilities as we continue to work with SEB.
