KUCHING: An e-commerce forum at The Waterfront Hotel here attracted some 700 participants eager to learn how to grow and expand their businesses online.

The Sarawak e-Commerce Forum was launched yesterday by International Trade and Industry, Industrial Terminal and Entrepreneur Development Assistant Minister Datuk Mohd Naroden Majais.

“Our first forum was in 2017, to create awareness on the importance of adopting e-commerce in order to remain relevant in business,” said organising chairman Kameri Affandi.

He explained that this year’s forum focused on expanding knowledge, delving deeper into the latest practices, ideas and solutions.

“The forum’s objectives are to bring ideas, solutions and opportunities for those new to e-commerce and those looking to scale up their business; to discuss security and privacy concerns as well as possible solutions in relation to e-commerce dealings; and to explore how social media became the most influential storytelling platform and a necessity in business-making and growth,” he added.

Kameri said the ministry had been actively inculcating the e-commerce culture among Sarawakians.

“Based on the 2018 e-commerce consumer survey by Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, Sarawak has achieved 24 percent e-commerce adoption rate.

“The ministry will continue its efforts to educate our society so that they are aware and ready to embrace new technology and practices in doing business.

“Currently, the ministry is providing three major programmes — an awareness programme, an entrepreneur skills development programme and a creative content programme,” he added.
