BINTULU: Police have arrested a second suspect to facilitate investigations into the case of 51 graves desecrated in Kemunting Muslim cemetery earlier this week.

Bintulu police chief Supt Batholomew Umpit, when met by reporters, said the arrest was made following public tip-off at around 1 pm last Wednesday.

The suspect in his 40s, was picked up by Bintulu Criminal Investigation Division (CID) and several items including his clothes were seized as evidence.

“He is currently remanded until today (July 28) to assist in the investigation under Section 297/427 of the Penal Code for trespassing into a burial place and committing mischief on property.

“As of date, the motive behind the desecration is still under police investigation,” he said.

On Monday (July 24), the police received report at around 7.15 am regarding the incident along Jalan Sebiew.

Investigations at the scene found that a total of 51 graves were defaced. Out of these, 41 graves had been vandalised with blue paint and the remaining 10 with red paint.

Intelligence and public information led to the arrest of the first suspect, a man in his 40s, who is believed to be behind the crime.
