KUCHING: A 26-year-old woman from Miri recently lost RM41, 000 to a man she met through Facebook.

Sarawak Commercial Crime Investigation Department chief Superintendent Mustafa Kamal Gani Abdullah said after striking a conversation with the man who identified himself as David Lee Chang online on March 13, the woman continued to keep in touch with him through the phone.

“Recently, David began offering her gifts like Mac Book, iPhone and branded shoes.

“The suspect told the victim that he will deliver the merchandise through Global Express Courier,” Mustafa said in a press statement yesterday.

He also told the victim, who worked as a secretary, that the goods had arrived in Hong Kong.

“However, the suspect told the victim that the merchandise will be shipped to Malaysia once clearance payment is settled.

“The victim was told to do a few transactions to an unknown bank account to settle the Security Tax Payment,” said Mustafa.

He said that the woman began to realise that she had been scammed after she was advised by a friend.

“Eventually, when she checked the postage number from Global Express Courier, she  found out there was no such merchandise being sent to Malaysia in her name,” said Mustafa.
