KUCHING: The state government, through SEDC Energy, will scale up the cultivation of algae nursery to 1,000 acres in Bintulu.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that currently, only a one-acre nursery is available here.
“SEDC Energy will develop another nursery, scaling up to 1000 acres in Bintulu. This means 1,000 acres can produce 10,000 barrels of crude algae oil per day.
“Meanwhile, in the pipeline, we are also going to set up a 10,000-acre nursery in Bintulu. When you multiply 10,000 with another 10,000, it will equal to 100,000 barrels per day,” he said.
He made these comments during a press conference after visiting the Algae Nursery site at Demak Laut Industrial Park today.
Abang Johari said that from algae crude oil, the state has the potential to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), diesel, and naphtha (gasoline).
“These three oils are premium oils that are used by the industry. Therefore, congratulations to SEDC Energy and Petronas for the successful collaboration that has produced these oils,” he added.
At the same event, Abang Johari witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between SEDC Energy Sdn Bhd and Resintech Plastics (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd for the manufacture of algae tanks.
Touching on the tanks, Abang Johari called upon the company to modernize and improve the technology for producing the tank.
“They must use robotic or modern technology which requires the injection method to produce the product from resin. And for this injection, you must use modern equipment where Artificial Intelligence (AI) can read what the proportions of your resin are to produce the type of tanks needed to produce algae.
“This tank can’t be simply produced because otherwise, sunlight could not enter. Therefore, this problem can usually be solved by AI. I will ask the company to modernize their production for long-term interest,” he explained.
