KUCHING: The Ministry of Women, Early Childhood, and Community Wellbeing Development (KPWK) has stressed the importance of sign language proficiency among teachers at SeDidik since its introduction in 2021.

Its minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said there has been positive development, with a total of 163 proficient teachers currently proficient in sign language.

She highlighted their ability to render the national anthem ‘Negaraku’ and the state anthem, ‘Ibu Pertiwiku,’ in sign language during official SeDidik events as evidence of progress.

“Alhamdulillah, since it was first introduced, the teachers have been able to showcase their proficiency in sign language.

“Furthermore, we can demonstrate to the community that SeDidik’s children are adept at singing the national anthem and ‘Ibu Pertiwiku’ in sign language during formal events and use sign language in their daily lives,” she said.

She was speaking at the SeDidik appreciation dinner marking its 33rd anniversary at a local hotel here yesterday (Jan 30).

She commended SeDidik’s commitment to fostering sign language skills among teachers and students, aligning with inclusive early childhood education principles.

“It is a proud achievement that aligns with inclusivity in early childhood education through the open-door policy,” she added.

SeDidik Sdn Bhd general manager Ayub Dahari reaffirmed the institution’s dedication to supporting the Sarawak government’s vision outlined in the Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030), focusing on economic prosperity, social inclusivity, and environmental sustainability.

“We provide support systems for working parents when focusing on economic prosperity, and on social inclusivity, we have implemented an open-door policy by accepting children with special needs and not rejecting their admission.

“We also expose children to environmental sustainability,” he said.

During the ceremony, Fatimah awarded the Excellent Service Award (APC) to 24 outstanding SeDidik staff members.

KPWK Deputy Minister Datuk Rosey Yunus and SeDidik Sarawak board member Salina Bujang were also present.
