KUCHING: Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) need to seize opportunities in the franchise industry following the rapid development of the sector, says Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

The Premier said the involvement of SMEs could double the sales value of the sector by 2025.

“The national franchise industry is targeted to increase the sales value from RM14.65bil in 2020 to RM22.66bil by 2025.

“So far, Sarawak has 11 franchise companies of various brands covering the food and beverage, health, beauty and service sectors.

“It is hoped that more franchise industry players from Sarawak get involved to enliven the country’s franchise industry.”

Abang Johari said this during the Karnival Barangan Malaysia (KBM) Sabah/Sarawak Zone held at Kuching Waterfront on Saturday evening (Nov 12).

He said some 1,149 franchisor companies were registered under the Franchise Act 1998, at the same time creating almost 49,000 job opportunities in 2021.

“In addition to increasing national income, it also opens up opportunities for people to get jobs.

“Therefore, we encourage SMEs in Sarawak to take advantage of digital technology to expand their business domestically and abroad.”

Abang Johari also assured that the state government would continue to provide support and encouragement to local SMEs. “Several initiatives have been prepared to help them through the relevant ministries.”

The KBM, organised by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs, was held from Nov 11 to 13.

In addition to holding the Malaysian Family Cheap Sale Programme, it also aimed to encourage the public to support products produced by local entrepreneurs
