KUCHING: The Sekapan team from Belaga are ready to make waves at the Sarawak Regatta 2024, poised to deliver an impressive performance that could turn heads.
This minority ethnic group, proudly hailing from Belaga, have been training intensively for over a month in anticipation of this prestigious event.
With more than 40 paddlers representing the Persatuan Bangsa Sekapan Belaga (PBSB), the team are eager to showcase their skills on the water.
Team manager Erick Drenner Dangan revealed that they have the support of the Kapit Resident, allowing them to represent both Belaga and the Kapit division.
“We consider ourselves the underdogs in this competition,” Erick told New Sarawak Tribune on Thursday.
As a proud Sekapan, Erick expressed optimism about the team’s prospects as they prepare to compete in 16 out of the 17 categories at this year’s regatta.
“While others will be competing in their fibreglass boats, we’re excited to race with a traditional wooden boat here in Kuching. It’s a unique challenge, and we’re eager to see how we measure up,” he shared.
The Sekapan team have been in Kuching for nearly a week, currently stationed at Petanak Market, where they have been finalising preparations. “We train three times a week back in Belaga and are confident in our abilities. Other teams may have trained longer, but we’re not intimidated. Our paddlers are filled with high spirits and determination,” Erick emphasised.
The team boast a diverse age range, featuring both first-time participants and seasoned regatta veterans, all united in their passion for the sport. Erick took a moment to extend his gratitude to Belaga assemblyman Datuk Liwan Lagang , Kapit MP Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, Hulu Rajang MP Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong, Murum rep Kennedy Chukpai Ugon and other sponsors for their ongoing support, which has fuelled their enthusiasm for the regatta.
