SELANGAU: The Let’s Do It Right Smart Community 2023 programme organised by the Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) was well-received by the villagers here.

The programme was undertaken in efforts to empower the local community, particularly in the Sungai Bawang, Sungai Kemena, and Sungai Tau areas.

Senator Datuk Dr Nuing Jeluing stated that various lectures and service counters have been set up to provide knowledge and facilities for the community through this programme.

He highlighted that the residents also had the opportunity to enhance awareness about drug-related issues through lectures conducted by the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK).

“It is the responsibility of all parties to combat drugs. While drug abuse used to be prevalent in urban areas, it is now concerning as it has reached rural homes,” he said during the event held at Rumah Lukok, Sungai Bawang, here yesterday (Aug 26).

Additionally, various other activities were organised, including fire prevention briefings and demonstrations on fire extinguisher usage by the Sibu Zone Fire and Rescue Station, health screenings, lectures on the introduction of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Trash to Cash (3R) initiatives, as well as information on the rabies and dengue outbreaks by SRDC.

There were also talks on combating bullying in schools by the Mukah District Police Headquarters and an introduction to the Self-Employment and Housewives Social Security Scheme by the Sibu Social Security Organisation (SOCSO) Office.

During the event, Dr Nuing also handed over fire extinguishing equipment to the longhouse chiefs in Sungai Bawang, Sungai Tau, and Sungai Kemena areas.

Also present were SRDC chairman Sempurai Petrus Ngelai, SRDC secretary Ng Siang Wei, and programme manager Minggu Angga.
