KUCHING: Delegates to the International Seminar on Aspiring Sarawak Delta UNESCO Global Geopark were feted to a dinner at the Waterfront Hotel Kuching on Monday night.
The dinner was part of the three-day international seminar taking place from October 7 to 9 showcasing the unique cultural heritage of Bumi Kenyalang on a global platform.
Through this event, the Sarawak government is optimistic that it can further convince evaluators to consider the 3,112 square-kilometre Sarawak Delta Geopark for designation as a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Global Geopark (UGGp) by 2026.
In order for the Sarawak Delta Geopark to be recognised as Malaysia’s third UGGp, it must meet at least four key criteria set by UNESCO evaluators.
Among these are the site’s unique universal geological value, its landforms, historical significance and origin.
Additionally, the third and fourth criteria involve establishing a network with other UNESCO Global Geoparks and highlighting the distinctive cultural elements present within the Sarawak Delta Geopark.
Since being designated as a National Delta Park on June 20, 2022, the Sarawak government has been working towards securing the prestigious UNESCO Global Geopark recognition for the Sarawak Delta Geopark.
