KUCHING: Senadin assemblyman Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin voiced disappointment with Padungan assemblyman Chong Chieng Jen for declining to support a motion of thanks to the late Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, the former Sarawak governor, during Wednesday’s (May 8) session of the Sarawak Legislative Assembly.
Lee stressed the importance of respecting Sarawakian culture and avoiding actions that could distress the deceased’s family.
He reminded the assembly of the human propensity for error and the necessity of forgiveness.
“There is a saying, ‘to err is human, to forgive divine.’ We are all human, imperfect, and prone to mistakes. Forgiveness is fundamental,” Lee stated.
Lee, who is also the Minister of Transport Sarawak, advocated for forgiveness to prevail over grievances, particularly in acknowledging Taib’s contributions and legacy.
He highlighted Taib’s pivotal role in Miri’s development, including his advocacy for its transformation into a city and his support for educational institutions like Curtin University, Swinburne University, Kolej Laila Taib and University of Technology Sarawak. “He was also instrumental in setting up Universiti Malaysia Sarawak.”
He also praised Taib’s efforts in promoting religious harmony, such as supporting the inaugural Christmas Parade in Miri.
Lee praised Taib as a visionary leader whose focus on development, especially in the hydro power sector, laid the groundwork for Sarawak’s transition to a green energy economy.
“The late Tun Taib’s philosophy on the politics of development has been instrumental in shaping Sarawak’s progress,” Lee told the august House.
