SERIAN: The redevelopment of Serian Danu Lake is poised to become a significant catalyst for economic growth, with expectations of drawing more investors to the district.
Education, Innovation, and Talent Development Minister Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn expressed optimism about the project, noting its potential to enhance the livelihoods of local residents.
He noted that while the project is being undertaken by a private developer, Tecktonic & Sons Holdings Sdn Bhd, the state government will continue exploring complementary opportunities to drive local economic activities.
“We hope the development will attract people who desire a serene lifestyle—one that is neither too busy nor too isolated.
“With the scenic green mountains surrounding the area, it offers an environment that some people genuinely appreciate. Beyond that, we aim to explore other ventures, particularly light industries, that can contribute to the local economy,” he said.
He told the media this after officiating the Pesta Danu Serian 2024 at Taman Danu Serian last night (Nov 22).
Sagah also highlighted the state’s commitment through the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA) to maximise the project’s benefits for the community.
He clarified that the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA) would not be involved in the redevelopment of Serian Danu Lake.
Instead, the agency will prioritise other sectors, including infrastructure, ecotourism, and improvements to public utilities and amenities.
Recognising Serian’s pivotal role as one of the major food suppliers for Sarawak, Sagah encouraged the expansion of industries related to livestock farming.
“That’s why we are studying practices in other countries, looking into opportunities to rear goats, sheep, cows, buffaloes, and more,” he added.
Meanwhile, regarding the event, Sagah, who is also the Tarat assemblyman, proposed renaming the festival from Pesta Danu Serian to Pesta Serian Timungen.
He explained that the change was necessary as the redevelopment project will replace the existing lake with a water park, hotel chalets, commercial buildings, service apartments, and other facilities.
“If there is no lake, we can use another name. The festival must go on because it brings many benefits. Therefore, I have suggested that we consider renaming it to Pesta Serian Timungen,” he said.
