SERIAN: Youths turned up in droves to participate in the Serian Parliamentary Youth Carnival over the last weekend.

The two-day event was jointly organised by the Serian Parliament Service Centre and the Youth wing of Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Serian branch.

Hosted in conjunction with the Malaysia Day celebration, the carnival was held at Leort Cottage, Kampung Pichin here.

On Saturday (Sept 17), Serian MP Datuk Sri Richard Riot Jaem led about 300 motorcyclists in a convoy from Tasik Danu located at the centre of Serian town to Tebedu before heading back to Leort Cottage.

Before the outbreak of Covid-19, Riot said his office had always organised such a programme to celebrate Malaysia Day.

“Last two years, we also did a convoy with the local folk but only involved super bikes.

“This time around, the youth section of SUPP decided to gather those who cannot afford to have a super bike to join the convoy,” he said to New Sarawak Tribune after the prize-giving ceremony at Leort Cottage on Sunday (Sept 18).

The second day of the carnival was cramped with sports activities involving youths in the district with the support of their family members.

The SUPP’s youth wing chairman Macswyzer Richard Riot said a total of 384 participants registered to participate in seven events contested.

“We targeted only 500 individuals and supporters will be present during this carnival. But those who came today may number over 700,” he said.

The main objectives of the carnival, he added, was to focus on attracting youth to engage in sports as well as to foster friendships.

The carnival was actually hosted for the first time at the district -level, said Riot who is also the Prime Minister’s Special Envoy to East Asia.

Previously, he said he always organised activities and programmes for local villages to celebrate Malaysia Day.

“This time around, we called it carnival as there were various activities held that were very well-attended. Basically the whole Serian participated,” he said.
