KUCHING: The Malaysian Peat Society is inviting the public to their discussion session themed Discover The Hidden Treasure: The Tropical Peatland of Sarawak this coming Sept 23.

In collaboration with the Sarawak Tropical Peat Research Association, the programme headed by its director Datuk Lulie Melling aims to delve, gain insight and shape the collective future responsibly through the discussion on tropical peatland.

The session will be held at Auditorium, Tropi on Lot 6035, Kuching-Samarahan Expressway 94300 Kota Samarahan from 8 am to 12.30 pm.

“Tropical peatlands are carbon-rich wetland ecosystems that form a significant part of Sarawak’s natural resources.

“Comprising about 13 per cent of Sarawak’s land area, they represent the largest extent of tropical peatlands in Malaysia.

“Once dismissed as ‘no man’s land’ or ‘wasteland’, tropical peatlands are emerging from the shadows to reveal their importance to our ecosystem,” it said in a press release issued yesterday.

It further explained that peatlands are unique areas where peat soil forms from the partial decay of organic matter such as plant stems and roots. Because peat soil is organic, it is a non-renewable resource that holds immense value.
