SIBU: Setting up facilities for extreme sports is no walk in the park.
Deputy Minister for Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu said various aspects need to be considered before these can be built.
“We do have a skate park in Kuching and also in Miri (apart from the skatepark in Sibu). But since there are so many disciplines in extreme sports including parkour and all that, we are looking into a suitable site.
“We have to understand also that the site must be accessible. There’s no point for us to build a park in the middle of nowhere and nobody comes,” he said after officiating at the Sarawak Extreme Sport Challenge 2023 in Sibu Active Youth Space here Saturday (Nov 11).
Rentap was commenting on whether the state government is planning to build more extreme sports facilities in Sarawak.
He said that Sibu should be proud for having facilities that can attract extreme sports enthusiasts to come to the town.
“This can build opportunities for our local talent to excel in extreme sports,” he added.
Meanwhile, on the Sarawak Extreme Sport Challenge 2023, Rentap hoped that next year the event will be on a grander scale.
“More than three countries participating (in the event), it can be considered an international event. So we want it to grow,” he said.
A total of 86 participants from various countries such as Brunei, Thailand, Indonesia and more are participating in the event which runs from Nov 10 to 12.
Also present were Sarawak Extreme Sport Association (SESA) President Nik Mohd Suhaily Bahari, Ministry for Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Permanent Secretary Morshidi Fredrick and others.
