JULAU: Seven locals found themselves under arrest following their alleged involvement in a cockfighting session at an oil palm plantation last Sunday (Mar 24).
Acting on information, a team from the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) went to the scene around 2.30 pm and discovered the open area had been turned into an illegal cockfighting pit.
Julau police chief DSP Andam Sulin Brayun said the presence of the police caught the men off guard and they scrambled into a nearby forest to escape.
“However, seven suspects, aged between 19 and 64, were swiftly arrested.
“Also seized during the raid were two live and one dead roosters, a weighing scale, a betting schedule inscribed on a piece of board, a spur, a table with ‘holo’ gambling equipment, and RM495 in cash,” he said.
The suspects are being investigated under Section 73(1)(g) of the Veterinary Public Health Ordinance 1999, which carries a fine of up to RM2,000, or imprisonment up to six months, or both.
In addition, the case is also investigated under Section 6(1) of the Common House Gambling Act 1953, which carries a fine of up to RM6,000 or imprisonment up to six months, or both.
Andam stressed that the police will not compromise with those found to be involved in gambling activities, especially in Julau and Pakan areas.
