KUCHING: Seven frisbee players from Bintulu have made Malaysia proud at the World Ultimate Championship 2024, held at the Gold Coast, Australia.
Organised by the World Flying Disc Federation, the World Ultimate Championships are considered the pinnacle of the sport, comparable to the Olympics for ultimate frisbee.
The tournament commenced on Aug 31 and concluded on Sept 7.
Malaysia was honoured with the ‘Spirit of the Game’ award, which recognises teams that exemplify sportsmanship, fair play, and respect-core values in ultimate frisbee.
Bernard Lee, the national team’s director, expressed pride in representing Malaysia on the world stage.
“We are immensely proud of Malaysia for making its debut on the global stage,” he said.
Bernard also called for support from local organizations, as well as the Ministry of Sports and the Ministry of Tourism.
Despite the team’s success, he highlighted several financial challenges related to international training and competition, which are currently borne entirely by the players.
He added that this financial strain significantly impacts their development and progress.
The seven players from Bintulu are Joseph Wong, Bernard Lee, Jong Fong Wei, Odric Ying, Mandy Ang, Mable Hii, and Melissa Lim, while George Sim who is the team’s assistant coach also hails from Bintulu.
