SERIAN: Seven shophouses at Pasar Serian, Jalan Chung Hua here, were engulfed in flames this afternoon (Sept 13).
No injuries or casualties were reported in the 1.24 pm incident.
A spokesman for the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said that firefighters from Serian station were dispatched to the scene, about 1km away, after receiving an emergency call.
Firefighters from Siburan, Batu Lintang and Tabuan Jaya stations were also deployed to the scene to assist in the extinguishing operation.
Upon arrival, the team found seven two-storey premises on fire and the extinguishing deed was performed using water sourced from their water tanker and nearby fire hydrants.
The flames were brought under control at 3 pm, followed by an extensive overhaul works to ensure that there was no risk of reignition.
Two electronics stores and two eateries sustained the most damages, with 80 per cent of its premises burned.
A lottery outlet was partially destroyed with 60 per cent damage, while a fabric store and another electrical appliance shop sustained 50 per cent and 30 per cent damage to its upper floors.
The cause of the fire and losses incurred is still under investigation.
