KUCHING: A 35-year-old man was sentenced to seven years imprisonment and two strokes of the cane for sexually assaulting his nine-year-old, stepdaughter in 2017.
Sessions Court Judge Jason Juga who handed him the penalty on Today (Sept 12) ordered him to serve the sentence with effect from the date of his arrest on December 18, 2019.
The assault took place in a house at Kampung Bunga Rampai, Batu Kitang.
The man was charged under Section 377CA of the Penal Code, which provides for five to 30 years in prison with caning.
Counsel Christopher Bada who represented the man requested a lenient sentence saying he has a health condition and that he needs to take care of his aged parents.
However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurfadzlin Mahmad Zulhasnan pushed for a heavy sentence as he had committed a serious offence which traumatised the victim.
