Among the areas affected were Jalan Lanang and Jalan Khoo Peng Long while several main road here were passable to vehicles, said Sibu Resident Charles Siaw.
Siaw, who is also Sibu Division Disaster Management Committee chairman, said the authorities’ personnel involved were placed on alert for any eventuality and were ready for rescue operation.
“So far, the situation is still under control and we are regularly monitoring the affected areas to ensure no occurrence of untoward incident,” he said.
Meanwhile, some affected roads in Kanowit were Jalan Lukut/Penyulau with water level between two and four metres high, and the water level at Jalan Rantau Kemiding and Jalan Lipus was between one and three metres high on Monday (Sept 14).
Here in Sibu, water overflowed onto Jalan Khoo Peng Loong.
Water level was still rising along Jalan Lanang as rain continued to pound the riverine town as at press time.
At the flood-prone Jalan Salim Stabau, the flood water rose up to knee-deep, and it was passable only by large vehicles while at Jalan Sungai Asan, the rising water posed danger to vehicles and pedestrians.
