KUCHING: Several roads in the city will be closed for the Kuching Marathon, which takes place this Sunday.
The roads, to be closed from 1am to 8am, are Jalan Main Bazaar-Lebuh Wayang, Jalan Gambier-Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg-Jalan Main Bazaar, Jalan Lebuh Wayang-Jalan Wawasan, Jalan Borneo-Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, Jalan Abell to Jalan Padungan, Jalan Padungan starting from Bulatan Sri Aman, Jalan Satok starting from the traffic lights at RTM-Jalan Satok towards Padang Merdeka, Jalan Haji Taha, Jalan Khoo Hun Yeang, Jalan Masjid, Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman (Tugu Kuching), from the traffic lights at St Mary-Lebuh Wayang and Jalan McDougall.
Kuching police chief ACP Awang Din Awang Gani advised those who wish to watch the event to park their vehicles at the car parks at Reservoir Park, Taman Budaya, Green Hill, Bangunan Saujana, Medan Kereta Top Spot, Dewan Suarah, Poliklinik Jalan Masjid and Padang Jubilee.
He also said Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg, Jalan Barrack and Jalan Wawasan would be closed earlier at 11.30pm on Saturday (tonight) to allow installation works for the start-finish arch.
He reminded the public to plan their journey ahead if they are heading to the city centre and obey traffic signs and as well as cooperate with uniformed personnel on duty.
Parking vehicles on the roadside is a no-no to avoid traffic congestion.
Some 9,600 local and foreign runners will be participating in the full marathon (42km-1am), half marathon (21km-4am) and fun run (10km-5.30am and 5km-6.30am). The start-finish point is at Padang Merdeka.
