KUCHING: A total of 35 Strategic Communication students from UNIMAS are to organise a sexual harassment awareness campaign entitled ‘Unspoken Soul’.

The campaign will take place at the lobby of the Faculty of Language and Communication on January 3 and 4, from 8.00 am to 5.00 pm.

Campaign’s director, Michelle Ethel said this event is organised with the aim to raise awareness of and understanding about sexual harassment issues in campus.

“When we talk about sexual harassment, we will usually think of males as the perpetrators and females as the victims,

“But this kind of mentality is unfair as there are equal chances for both men and women to encounter any form of sexual harassment.” Michelle said.

She added that sexual harassment is not permitted or approved by any culture or religion in society because it insults the dignity of the victim, regardless of gender.

“Our campaign’s slogan is ‘Let The Voice Be Heard’ because we want to let the victims share their experiences and let them know we are here for them,” she explained.

Michelle also said that in the awareness campaign, activities such as Podcasts, Confession Board, What I Wore gallery, Self-defence Roadshow, ‘Paint Me’ and ‘The Jar’ will be distinctively carried out to make clear the different facets of sexual harassment, including sexual harassment victims’ encounters, the phenomenon, and after-effects of sexual harassment.

She welcomes the public to visit the upcoming awareness campaign to better understand the significance of sexual harassment.

“We hope that through this campaign, everyone can join force in breaking the silence of sexual harassment and promote a healthy environment of equity, equality, and justice,” she said.
