KUCHING: Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) had released a  16-foot crocodile back to the Limbang River on Sunday because it did not receive any prior complaint of any menace or threat posed by the presence of crocodiles in that area.

SFC, in a statement yesterday, said it also took into account a survey carried in May that revealed the crocodile population density was about one reptile per kilometre on the stretch of the river mouth to Limbang town, which was nowhere near the level where culling might be deemed necessary.

The corporation said it issued a statement on the matter following numerous enquiries it received, questioning the rationale for the release of the huge crocodile into the river last Sunday.

“SFC will continue to closely monitor the crocodile situation in the area concerned. The corporation will also install more warning signage where crocs are most often seen; these include Jetty Tamu Limbang, Medamit, Kpg Lubuk Piasau and Kubong,” it said.
