KUCHING: Illegal loggers are now finding it difficult to escape the eyes of enforcers! Enforcement officers from Sarawak Forestry Corporation’s (SFC) Kuching Regional Office detected a suspicious lor r y passing by Sarawak Forestry’s corporate of f i ce near Jalan Tapang last Monday, yesterday’s press statement pointed out. “Our enforcers were trailing the lorry to a construction site where 500 pieces of mangrove and jungle poles were found in the lorry.
An extended search in the area subsequently revealed another 225 poles on the ground. Upon further checking, the contractor and the driver failed to show any documents on the poles,” said a spokesperson through the statement.
In a separate case, a joint operation between SFC Sibu Regional Office and Forest Department Sarawak at Sengayan, Kanowit on 16 January, detected and detained 37 pieces of illegal logs of various sizes and species. During their patrols, the team also raided separate locations at Kanowit near Ulu Tuah, Jalan Nibong Tada and found 81 pieces of illegal logs stacked in piles.
The locations where the logs were found are adjacent to a forested area. None of the logs has any official markings. All the cases have been reported to the nearest police station and will be handed over to Forest Department for further investigation and disposal.
