LUNDU: The Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) has launched an investigation into the death of a juvenile dolphin found washed ashore at the Union Yes Retreat and Training Centre at Siar beach here on Wednesday (May 22).
In a Facebook post, SFC stated that the carcass was discovered by staff member Fanddy Ahmad Rosli around 2.20pm.
“Andrew Lo, Chief Executive Officer of the Sarawak Bank Employees Union (SBEU), confirmed the discovery and reported the incident to SFC.
“Fanddy noted that the dolphin had a wound that appeared to be caused by a sharp object,” the statement added.
SFC assured that the dolphin’s body has been transported to Gunung Gading National Park (GGNP) for further examination.
A veterinary specialist Dr Sandy will conduct a post-mortem to determine the cause of death.
SFC Flora and Fauna Forensic and Genetic Resource Bank section head Azroie Denel travelled from Teluk Melano to GGNP to oversee the investigation.
The corporation also thanked the public for their vigilance in reporting the incident, stressing its importance for marine conservation efforts.
“Public cooperation is highly appreciated to ensure the sustainability of marine life in Sarawak,” it said.
