MIRI: The return of Shell Malaysia to Miri is another concrete proof of the confidence in the Sarawak government under the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition, said the Premier of Sarawak.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said only GPS could ensure stable and good governance.
“And we are forward looking. With this sort of confidence, people will have confidence to invest in Sarawak.
“As you know, there is a major plant in Bintulu that is also oil and gas, which is PPTEP Hong Kong, on separation of sour gas plant, and we hope Shell would also come back to do a similar project, besides investment in hydrogen production by Sumitomo and Samsung.”
He said this at a ceremony to present Pantai Bayu Indah the contract for the construction of Shell Malaysia Upstream headquarters at Miri Times Square on Friday (Aug 26).
With such projects and investments, Abang Johari said it would give a lot of benefit to the state economy under the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.
“This is where we expect public and private sector contribution to our economy. Initially, it was supposed to be RM64bil up to 2030, but with all these new investments, we have revise it to more than RM100bil up to 2030.
“And we have to upgrade our infrastructure, particularly connectivity, including digital connectivity and with that ecosystem, the beneficiaries will be the private sector as well as society at large.
“And this is the way forward for Sarawak, with unity and political stability, we are able to increase our GDP from over RM120bil to RM280bil by 2030. It’s a very ambitious plan but I hope with your support, I think we can achieve this plan of turning Sarawak.”
Abang Johari said Sarawak now had its own gas roadmap being planned by Petros and its players to have gas distribution throughout the state.
“In 2016, we are having power in distribution of gas, we are exempted from the federal law, we are on our own and that is one of the ways for us to get autonomy.”
He also hoped that the new Shell Malaysia Upstream headquarters here would be one of the key buildings with the green building index (GBI).
