Ship’s crew member found dead, another still missing

Rescuers retrieved the victim's floating body about five metres from the search and rescue (SAR) control post at Bungan Kecil jetty today afternoon (June 27).

MUKAH: One of the two missing crew members of a vessel that capsized in Batang Igan last Sunday (June 26), was found floating in the river on Monday (June 27).

The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said the body was found around 2.25pm by rescuers.

The victim, identified as Ting Ling, 23, was discovered some 5m from the search and rescue control post at the Bungan Kecil jetty.

At 4.20pm, Monday, search was still on to locate the second victim, an Indonesian in his 20s.

The operation involved a total of 26 people from Daro Bomba, Sungai Merah Bomba diving unit, police and Sarawak Rivers Board.

Last Sunday, the vessel, which was carrying sand and had a crew of five, capsized near Kampung Bungan Kecil, Batang Igan.

The incident was witnessed by a passer-by who managed to rescue two of the crew members but three others went missing.

Sungai Merah police, who received a report around 4.20am, immediately alerted Bomba and a search and rescue operation was launched.

On the same day, at around 1.30pm, rescuers were informed that a third crew member had managed to swim to safety. It was reported that he swam ashore after drifting 300m downstream from the scene.
