KUCHING: Malaysia continues to be shocked by announcements after announcements, with speculations over a new coalition following the political meetings yesterday.
First, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad wrote a letter of resignation to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah.
This was confirmed by the Prime Minister’s Office, which stated that Dr Mahathir’s resignation letter was sent to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at 1pm.
This was then followed by the announcement that Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), of which Mahathir was also the chairman, was leaving Pakatan Harapan (PH).
President Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin in a statement said that the decision was made after taking into account the current and future political developments of the country.
“All members of the Dewan Rakyat from Bersatu are also to exit PH,” he said.
“All of them have signed a statutory declaration to continue supporting and putting their trust in Dr Mahathir as the prime minister,” he said in a statement.
This was followed by the sacking of PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Azmin Ali and vice-president Zuraida Kamaruddin with immediate effect.
The announcement, which was made by PKR secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution, later led to a declaration by Azmin that he was quitting PH along with 10 other MPs.
In a day of fast-moving political events, all eyes are on Istana Negara now.
