SIBU: A young man with a previous record for theft was detained after he stole from a supermarket here on Monday (May 16).
Sibu district police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said the incident happened at a supermarket in Lorong Chew Siik Hiong around 4pm.
He said the suspect, in his early 30s, had placed the stolen items in his trouser pockets and left the supermarket without paying.
“The suspect was arrested by the supermarket supervisor with the help of a colleague.
“Police personnel from the Central Police Station who were alerted rushed to the scene to arrest the suspect,” Zulkipli said yesterday.
He said the suspect also stole electrical goods from a shop in Lorong Chew Siik Hiong, about 100 metres away from the supermarket the same day.
“The suspect had stolen various types of groceries worth RM57 from the supermarket and RM273 worth of electrical goods from the electrical shop,” he said.
He said the suspect who had a previous criminal record for theft was now under remand for two days from May 17 to 19.
Both cases are being investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code and Section 379 of the Penal Code.
