SIBU: Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng has urged all photographers in Sibu to not miss the chance to capture memorable moments during the upcoming Borneo Cultural Festival (BCF) and the Malaysia Games (Sukma).

He said both events, starting next month, are significant attractions that will draw visitors to the area, and photographs will serve as lasting mementos of these occasions.

“Next month will be the busiest month for us in Sibu, with BCF followed by Sukma. I encourage photographers here to capture interesting moments throughout these two events.

“The photographs you take can help promote the beauty and significance of our town,” he said during the Colours of Sarawak Photography Contest Prize Presentation Ceremony, organised by the Photographic Society of Sibu Sarawak (PSSS) yesterday (July 29).

Chieng added that photography plays a crucial role in preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of the community.

“The photos you capture and share can attract outsiders, inspiring them to experience the places and cultures you depict.

“That is why I believe photos have enduring power and relevance as they preserve history,” he added.

Meanwhile, on the contest, Chieng said that it not only celebrates artistic talent but also serves as an important initiative to boost tourism by showcasing the beauty and diversity of Sarawak.

“The photography contest offers a platform for photographers to display their work while promoting the destinations they capture, creating a synergy that supports the growth of our state,” he added.

A total of 132 participants entered the competition, which was divided into five categories: Culture, Nature, Adventure, Food, and Festival.

The winner, first runner-up, and second runner-up in each category received prizes of RM3,000, RM2,000, and RM1,000, respectively, along with certificates.

Also present was PSSS President Peter Lee.
