KUCHING: Brownson John Gustin said that he trained at least two hours per day to prepare for the para powerlifting event at the 21st Para Malaysia Games (Para Sukma XXI) 2024.
The 15-year-old bronze medalist and the brother of paralympic gold medallist Bonnie Bunyau and Para SUKMA gold medalist Bryan Junency said that he trained three days per week, specifically Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
“I started to join powerlifting a year ago, because it is part of my interest and passion.
“However, I also admitted that I joined powerlifting because of my brothers, who have been among my main sources of support,” he said.
He was speaking to reporters after receiving the bronze medal at Multipurpose hall, Youth and Sports Department here on Wednesday.
He also aims to be as better as his brothers in the future.
“I would pretty much say that I want to be as famous, if not more famous than my brothers,” he said while laughing about it.
Before becoming an athlete, his routine was not as fixed as his siblings.
“Now I have my own routine, such as waking up very early, taking a shower, having my breakfast and then heading for my training session, after school of course.
“My dad even advised me not to play too much video games, instead focus on my training more,” he added.
During the event, even if he was not able to perform as well as he expected, especially in front of his brothers, Brownson knows he has done as best as he can.
“I’m pretty sure they were nervous seeing me on the stage.
“But I do know I have done my best and they are proud of me regardless,” he added.
As for the future, he hopes to participate in next year’s championship in Dubai.
Additionally, Brownson stated he would ignore all the naysayers who have said some not so nice things about him.
“Sure at first, I would hear such comments, but I would just let them be and ignore them,” he added.
