SIBU: The Sibu Library was officially launched by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Tun Openg today.
According to Pustaka Negeri Sarawak, the library began operations on Sept 15 after its soft launching by Pustaka Negeri Sarawak board of management chairman Tan Sri Hamid Bugo on Sept 14.
Various programmes were conducted since its opening and it is currently on a membership drive.
“The library is our new branch for the central region and is a catalyst in assisting the government to reduce the digital divide, and preparing the communities to embrace and be part of the state’s digital economy agenda.
“Pustaka Negeri Sibu will serve the central region, which covers Sibu, Mukah, Kapit and Sarikei. It functions as the digital information service portal for the central region of Sarawak.”
Meanwhile, during the launch, the Chief Minister’s Public Library Award 2020 was won by Perpustakaan Desa Kampung Hulu Meludam.
The award covers five categories, namely ‘Library as An Innovation Centre’, ‘Library as An Important Community Asset’, ‘Library as a Community Centre’, ‘Library as a Strategic Partner’, and ‘Outstanding Individual Award’.
‘Library as An Innovation Centre’ was won by Sibujaya public library, ‘Library as An Important Community Asset’ won by Sarikei public library, ‘Library as a Community Centre’ won by Bintulu public library, while ‘Library as a Strategic Partner’ was won by Mukah public library.
The ‘Outstanding Individual Award’ was won by Saadiah Maliki, an assistant librarian from Perpustakaan Desa Kampung Hulu Meludam.
