SIBU: This town is now a peaceful place to live in as it has successfully shed its image as the hotbed for gangsterism.
Sibu district police chief, ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said the police had ensured that the town was safe for the people to live in by strictly enforcing the law.
“There is a slight increase in crime this year but it is not like before when outsiders once considered Sibu as the hotbed for gangsterism,” he said at the handing over of duties yesterday.
Supt Collin Babat is the new deputy police chief. He took over from Supt Wong Chee Kiong who is retiring.
Stanley said big crime syndicates no longer existed in the town.
“What we have now is only part-time thieves who steal for their survival,” he told.
He said the police sought continuous cooperation from the public next year in combating crime.
“We want the town to remain peaceful. Please abide by the law. Don’t resort to crime to survive because of the poor economy,” he said.
In welcoming Collin, he hoped the latter would use his vast experience in the force to help maintain the existing peace and stability in the town.
Collin’s last posting was in the public administration unit of the Kuching police headquarters.
Stanley also paid tribute to Wong for his contribution to the force here since becoming the second man on September 10.
