SIBU: The district’s total amount of losses incurred from scam cases last year has dropped by 36.03 per cent compared to 2021.

Sibu OCPD ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said losses incurred from scam cases last year and the previous year showed a decrease of RM4.20mil.

“Last year, the district recorded losses amounting to RM7.46mil from scam cases compared to RM11.67mil in 2021.

“As for investigated cases, we recorded a total of 443 cases last year, which is an increase of 84 cases, compared to the previous year’s figure of 359.

“Last year, a total of 441 arrests were made related to commercial crimes, an increase of 289 arrests, from 2021’s arrest figure of 152,” he said during the Sibu District Police Headquarters (IPD) monthly assembly on Tuesday (Jan 17).

The drop in losses incurred in scam cases was the result of awareness among the community through talks, social media, omnipresence, and other campaigns on various scams such as parcel scams, love scams, and non-existent loans.

ACP Zulkipli stated that such awareness needed to be shared with the community in order to avoid them from being victims of crime.

On the overall index crime cases, he said the district recorded a total of 438 cases, which showed a decrease of 96 cases compared to 534 in 2021.

“As for drug statistics, our men seized RM1.56mil worth of drugs last year and arrested 887 suspects to 594 arrests and RM364,786 worth of drugs seized in 2021.

“This year, our IPD will continue to work hard to make more arrests and operations to combat such dangerous activities.”
