SIBU: This central town in Sarawak is ready to host major sports events, asserted Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu.
The Deputy Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development said Sibu even has world-class sports facilities such as the Azman Hashim Sport Complex.
“Not only the facilities, Sibu has the technical people around; this is a development that we are happy about,” he said when met by reporters at the opening ceremony for Sarawak Games (SUKSAR) at Sibu Indoor Stadium here today (Jan 15).
Meanwhile, when asked about the readiness of every sports facility that will be used for the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) throughout the state, he said that there were several challenges that needed to be taken into account.
He said that his ministry and SSC were working hard to upgrade all the needed facilities, and among the challenges they are facing is the transportation of the equipment needed from overseas, and limited time left for SUKMA.
“We cannot afford to postpone the tournament. But this needs to be a constructive effort. As you see, with the festivities around the corner, we might encounter limitations on the workforce.
“These are challenges that we are keeping track of. So, we know what our limitations are, and we need to keep it on track,” he stressed.
He also emphasised the need to comply and abide by sports development within and outside the country to ensure that we are not left behind.
