SIBU: After a month of eager anticipation, the victors of the Sibu Street Parade Competition were unveiled during the grand opening of Carnival Sibujaya 2023 last night (Sept 16).

The competition featured five distinct categories: Secondary Schools and Higher Learning Institutions (IPTs), Community, Open, Musical Band, and Photography. The prizes were presented by Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) chairman Sempurai Petrus Ngelai.

In the Secondary Schools and IPTs category, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Durin emerged as the victor, with SMK Sungai Merah securing second place and SMK Kampung Nangka taking third place.

For the Community category, Persatuan Teresang Dayak Sarawak claimed the top position, with Kelab Kesenian dan Kebudayaan Dayak Sibu (KEMADA) in second place and Persatuan Melanau Sibu finishing third.

In the Open category, the Royal Malaysian Police Sibu District clinched victory, followed by the Department of Veterans Affairs ATM (Armed Forces) Sarawak Branch in second place, and Civil Defense Force Malaysia Sibu District in third.

Each winner in their respective category was awarded RM5,000, while the second-place winners received RM3,000, and the third-place winners were granted RM2,000.

In the Photography category, Desmond Ngu Chien Yew emerged as the champion, securing a prize of RM1,500. Ling Sie Huong took second place with a reward of RM1,000, and Tiong Chung Ting claimed third place with a prize of RM800.

In the Musical Band category, all participating groups received consolation prizes of RM2,000.

The recipients of these prizes were Sibu Boy’s Brass Band, SMK Tung Hua School Band, and SMK Sacred Heart Bagpipe Band.

The Sibu Street Parade was held in conjunction with Sarawak’s 60th anniversary of independence on August 12 here with a total of 60 contingent participants in the event.
