SIBU: The construction of Yayasan Sarawak International Secondary School (YSISS) here is expected to be completed by December this year.

Education, Innovation, and Talent Development Minister Datuk Seri Roland Sagah said the project has reached 84 per cent completion.

However, he said after its completion the next process would be to obtain the Occupancy Permit (OP) and other related approvals, which may take some time.

“We hope that by the first quarter of next year, everything will be in order so that we can be ready for student intake by 2026,” he said after a visit to the YSISS construction site here Monday (Aug 26)

Sagah added that YSIS can accommodate around 500 students and has various facilities, including dormitories, which are funded by the Sarawak government through Yayasan Sarawak.

He added that the first intake will be limited to just over 100 students.

“Our first intake will be open to over 100 students, as we have done in Kuching and Petra Jaya, but this number will increase every year,” he said.

Regarding eligibility for admission tests to the school, Sagah said that a quota of 50 per cent will be prioritised for students from the B40 group, while 40 per cent will be for the M40 group.

The remaining 10 per cent, he said, will be open to students from the T20 group.

“Of course, we will emphasise English, but this does not mean we do not learn Malay, and, the mandatory subject is History.

“We hope to produce more students in the field of Science here so that more future generations will pursue the technology sector.

“This is because, at present, our government’s policy is moving towards the adoption of new technology, particularly green technology,” he added.

Also present were Sagah’s deputy Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee and Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Permanent Secretary Adana Jed.
