Sibu’s finest arrest third suspect in cannabis case

SIBU: A local man believed to be connected to a recent seizure of two cannabis plants here has been arrested on Thursday (May 25) to facilitate investigations into the case.
 
Last Wednesday (May 24), a brother-sister duo in their 50s were arrested for alleged cultivation and possession of two cannabis plants at their residence at Lorong Rambai.
 
The plants, together with a black bag containing soil and alleged dried cannabis leaves, were seized with an estimated value of RM20,000.
 
Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said the third suspect, a 24-year-old, was picked up by Sibu narcotics police around 9am at the court grounds.
 
He also confirmed that the suspect’s arrest was to assist in the investigation into the recent cannabis case.
 
“The suspect, who had no prior records, was tested positive for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
 
“He is being remanded until May 30 for further investigations under Section 6B and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952,” he said.
 
If convicted under Section 6B, he could face life imprisonment and up to six lashes of the rotan.
 
Meanwhile, the penalty for Section 15(1)(a) would be a maximum fine of RM5,000, a maximum two-year jail term, or both, as well as being placed under a two-year police supervision in accordance with Section 38B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
