KUCHING: Silat practitioners should adopt digital technology to promote and study the wisdom of the traditional martial art.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said practitioners could promote and develop silat not only for self-defence but also to promote its culture, values, wisdom and harmony worldwide.

He said they should also be knowledgeable in world events.

“In this technology-driven era, it is important for silat practitioners to be well educated to be able to face challenges in the world,” he said when officiating at the Rumpun Silat Sarawak (RSS) Silat Warrior Legacy Night at the Sarawak Indoor Stadium, here last night.

He said Muslims who practised silat must never forget the core teaching of silat which emphasised the need to have good  intentions.

“The art of silat is a culture that has high-value ethics and good and pure intentions. In silat you learn to defend yourself, your parents, and obey your teacher because they are the ones who give you the knowledge,” he said.

On another note, Johari praised the silat teams for being able to perform silat in a peaceful manner.

He said the state government would continue to allocate funds for sports, including silat.

The Silat Warrior Legacy Night was organised by Tupong assemblyman Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman, with an objective to provide an opportunity for silat practitioners to showcase their skills.

About 355 silat practitioners from Kuching, Miri, and Bintulu demonstrated their martial art moves and techniques.
