KUCHING: The book ‘Silent Defenders – Sarawak’s 27th Year (1962-1990) Insurgency’, authored by DSP Lim Chian Seng, stands as a tribute to those who tirelessly defended Sarawak and Malaysia during challenging times.
Datuk Idris Buang, the Deputy Speaker of the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN), highlighted that the book offers valuable lessons for the younger generation, helping them grasp the true essence of independence.
“The book recounts the sacrifices and battles fought to secure the freedom we now enjoy. As Sarawakians, we must deeply appreciate the dedication of our military, the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), and individuals who came from Kelantan and West Malaysia to aid in the fight against Indonesian terrorists and communists during that era,” he said.
Idris officially launched ‘Silent Defenders – Sarawak’s 27th Year (1962-1990) Insurgency’ at the DUN here on yesterday (Sept 15).
During the event, Lim expressed gratitude for completing the book and for the opportunity to share his stories and experiences with the current generation.
Lim, who served for 33 years in the Sarawak constabulary and later in the PDRM, recalled numerous unforgettable events from his life, including the Japanese occupation, his school years, and his journey into law enforcement.
He explained that the book primarily focuses on his encounters with Indonesian voluntary terrorists alongside Commonwealth forces during the Malaysia-Indonesia confrontation.
Lim also extended his appreciation to Tan Sri Jamil Johari and Tan Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar for contributing forewords to the book.
He acknowledged the sponsorship of the book’s publication by Idris and Miro Simuh, as well as the invaluable assistance provided by James Ritchie in organising his thoughts.
The book is dedicated to the PDRM, Border Scouts, and Sarawak Rangers who defended Sarawak against communist threats from the 1960s to the 1980s.
Additionally, it honours the lives of Border Scouts, policemen, and those currently serving Sarawak with dedication and commitment.
