KUCHING: Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Stakan branch chairman Datuk Sim Kiang Chiok is ready to face Democratic Action Party’s (DAP) Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong should the latter bring him to court over a posting on his Facebook.

He said that on May 7, he was served a letter of demand from the Chong Brothers Advocates at his office, demanding him to make an apology on several platforms with regards to a posting in his Facebook on April 29, 2021.

“For the information of the public and our supporters, the posting I had made originated from a posting made by Emma Leong on the Telegram app. Upon stumbling on the said posting, I felt that the question she asked was legitimate.

“I then copied and reposted the graphics on my Facebook page.

“I state here that there were many other posts with the exact same graphics made by netizens on various online platforms such as Facebook and WhatsApp. So the question here is: Why me?” he said at a press conference at the SUPP headquarters in Jalan Tan Sri Ong Kee Hui today (May 8).

In view of this, he said it was obvious that it was more of a political ploy to silence the people and he believed that in a democratic country, there was no crime in asking a question.

“Upon receiving the letter of demand, I consulted my legal advisers and the party legal advisers.

“Therefore, I am here to announce that I will be facing this matter head on and should we have to go to court, all I want to say here is see you in court,” he said.

He said that he was not intimidated and would continue to raise matters which he felt were of public interest, particularly those affecting Sarawakians.

“Due to possibilities of this matter going to court, I will, however, refrain from any further comment on this particular post,” said Sim.

On May 7, special assistant to State DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen, Michael Kong Feng Nian said that Yong had issued a letter of demand to Sim over the Facebook posting which labelled her as a Sarawak traitor.
