LUNDU: The local authorities and communities are called upon to organise a road safety campaign for commuting along the Pan Borneo Highway.
Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian emphasised the importance of the campaign to educate and remind everyone that the Pan Borneo Highway is significantly different from the village roads they are accustomed to.
“The stretch of Pan Borneo from Kuching to Kampung Bukit Papan in Lundu meets international standards, comparable to overseas highways, except that it is toll-free in Sarawak.
“Unfortunately, I was told that many serious road accidents had happened,” he said in a Facebook post after a recent visit here.
He expressed that the increase in road accidents in Sarawak was not surprising, as he had previously mentioned that once the Pan Borneo Highway was completed, the number of accidents would rise.
“Unlike the North South Highways, which have dedicated medical specialists and trauma teams along the entire length, Sarawak only has full trauma teams in Kuching.
“Hence, we are negotiating for health autonomy under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) to address Sarawak’s needs,” he explained.
Dr Sim also reminded road users in the state of the importance of driving carefully and responsibly, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience on the Pan Borneo Highway for an extended duration.
