KUCHING: The State Health Department (JKNS) declared a new cluster in Simunjan District on Friday (May 28), dubbed the Tengah Hulu Gedong Cluster.
The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) in a statement on Friday said this was a community cluster detected in Kampung Tengah Hulu Gedong, Simunjan.
They said Covid-19 transmissions had occurred through social visiting movements during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration.
“The index case is a local man aged 34 years who was detected through symptomatic individual screening at Simunjan Hospital on May 18 and confirmed positive on May 19.
“The case started to experience and exhibit symptoms on May 16. The index case works as a postman in Serian and he is likely to have been infected from the community,” they said.
They said screenings of the index case’s family members and close contacts had resulted in an additional 19 individuals testing positive for Covid-19, involving contacts from three different localities in Simunjan District.
“A total of 154 individuals have been screened, whereby 20 cases have tested positive including the index case, 62 have tested negative, and 72 are still awaiting laboratory results,” said the committee.
They said all these positive cases had been referred to Simunjan Hospital and admitted into the Low-Risk Treatment Centre (PKRC) in Serian District for the purpose of isolation and further treatment.
On the other hand, JKNS also declared the end of one cluster, namely the Sungai Gemuan Cluster in Meradong District, after no new cases involving this cluster were reported in the last 28 days.
With this, SDMC said there were 85 active clusters remaining in Sarawak, with 10 recording a total of 39 additional cases on Friday.
