KUCHING: The proposal to set up a Singapore Consulate General Office here is still awaiting approval from the federal government.
Singapore’s High Commissioner to Malaysia, Vanu Gopala Menon said that the application had been submitted and once approved, next would be to arrange for the establishment of the consulate.
“Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has also informed the Prime Minister of Singapore that Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has raised the matter and Anwar agrees with the idea of opening the Singapore Consulate General Office.
“Therefore, we are submitting a request and waiting for a response from the federal government.
“Once we get the approval, we will start the work to establish the consulate in Kuching,” he said after paying a courtesy call on Abang Johari at Wisma Bapa Malaysia here today (Mar 4).
Menon also mentioned that a Singapore Consulate General Office will be set up in Kota Kinabalu.
Also present during the courtesy visit were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan and Sarawak State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki.
Later, Abang Johari also received a courtesy visit from AJ Architects Sdn Bhd.
Joining them was Sarawak Deputy State Secretary (Economic Planning and Development) Datuk Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel.
