KUCHING: New flight services between Singapore and Sarawak are expected to start on December 16.
Minister for Transport, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, paid a courtesy visit recently to Singapore’s Transport Minister S.Iswaran to discuss collaborations in transportation matters and the provision of new flight sectors between Singapore and Sarawak .
In a statement, Lee announced that a confirmation was made by AirAsia Berhad on their intention to mount four times weekly direct passenger air service between Singapore and Sibu and vice versa.
“The operation will begin on December 16 and an increase of flight operations between Singapore and Miri from four times weekly to five times weekly will start this month.
“The flight operations are on every Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday”, he said.
He added that it is very timely for the flight operations between Singapore and Sibu as this is also a manifestation of the airlines and other big corporations’ confidence in Sarawak especially on what Sarawak can provide.
“We believe with the opening of this new route between Singapore and Sibu, the distance time and comfort of doing business will be less hassle especially if we need to bring in cargo or business travellers from overseas via Singapore to Sibu.
“The travelling time and expenses will be much reduced compared to transiting in Kuala Lumpur”, he added.
He also announced that, AirAsia’s Singapore-Sibu flight is now open for booking to the public and travellers. They can go directly to the AirAsia website. The day of operations will be every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.
On another note, SCOOT Tigerair Pte. Ltd has also increased their flight from Singapore to Miri from twice weekly to three times weekly starting November 1. The flight operations are on every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday.
