KUCHING: This year’s Siniawan Heritage Fiesta, from August 17-20, is expected to draw more than 25,000 people.
According to the Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth, and Sports, Datuk Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, the festival, which started last year, aims to promote Siniawan as a tourist destination.
“Last year’s festival attracted approximately 20,000 people and this year, we are expecting a bigger crowd,” he told a press conference at his office in Bangunan Baitulmakmur here yesterday.
“The festival received good support from not only the local community but those outside as well.
“Siniawan is a very interesting place as many historical events involving James Brooke happened here, so it’ll attract people to go there.
“In addition to that, it can help to increase economic activities in the area, help the local community as well as boost the tourism industry there,” he said.
Among the various activities that will be held during the festival are a Cheongsam Traditional Performance Contest, singing competitions, a Chinese chess competition, a Country & Western Cowboy Night, street games, local band performances, and the Siniawan Heritage Fiesta 2017 Charity Run.
