KUCHING: Police nabbed six persons including a woman on suspicion of drug abuse, and they seized drugs worth RM8,546 in the past week.

Kuching deputy police chief, Supt Merbin Lisa, said the arrests were made at three locations — Lorong Bayor Bukit 2, Tabuan Jaya; Lorong Pedidi 4, Petra Jaya; and Lorong Bintawa 1, Bintawa Village.

The first arrest happened around 9.15pm on Dec 6 and it involved the arrest of a man behind a supermarket at Tabuan Jaya.

From him the police seized a packet of drugs believed to be syabu weighing 6.54g and valued at RM654. They also soon found that the suspect had two past drugs-related records.

“Meanwhile, the second arrest happened in Petra Jaya around 6pm on Dec 7. Two men were arrested for possessing 26 packets of drugs (believed to be syabu) weighing 73.72g and valued at RM7,372.

“Also seized was a RM39,000 car. Background checks revealed that both suspects had past drugs-related records.

“The third arrests happened just after 5pm last Saturday at Bintawa Village. From the two men and a woman the police seized a packet of drugs weighing 5.20g and valued at RM520. One of the arrestees had a past record related to drugs.

Merbin said all the suspects aged 21 to 35 tested positive for drugs and will be investigated under Section 39B, Section 39A(1) and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1953.

Investigations revealed that the suspects had obtained their drugs through phone calls and paid for them through bank transactions. The drugs are then sent by local distributors to designated places and the buyers personally collect them.

Efforts are still going on to identify the suppliers or sources of the drugs and to track down the traffickers.

“The local people are urged to give us information if they know of drug trafficking and abuse in their own areas to enable us to take immediate action,” he said.
