BINTULU: Six schools in Bintulu district were closed after 12 students and teaching staff tested positive for Covid-19 on Tuesday.

This was confirmed by Bintulu MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, who revealed that the six schools were SJKC Siong Boon, SK St Anthony, SK Sungai Tisang, SK Kelawit, SK Nanga Tau and SK Kampung Jepak.

Tiong also said four primary and secondary school teachers and students involved in online teaching had also tested positive.

“They are from SMK Bandar Bintulu, SMK Baru, SMK Tatau and SK Tanjung Batu but these schools have not been closed because those infected are only involved in online teaching and learning before being tested positive.”

Tiong added that when a positive case was detected, the Bintulu Health Department would place affected students and teachers in hotels for quarantine and conduct tests.

“Sanitisation work was also carried out on the affected premises.”

He also said some parents had asked the Ministry of Education (MoE) to suspend face-to-face classes.

He called on the MoE to review the cases and listen to feedback from parents to replace face-to-face teaching with online classes.
