SIBU: Six teams are participating in the President Cup 2023 tournament hosted by the Sibu Division Lawn Tennis Association (SDLTA) at SDLTA’s tennis courts, Bukit Lima Sports Complex here from June 30 to July 2.

According to SDLTA president Michael Lau, the three-day tournament was organised earlier to facilitate the renovation of the tennis court.

He said due to the tournament been brought forward earlier this year, the participation this time was relatively small.

“Normally, we will organise it around August or September annually, but because the tournament is being held too early, many teams are unable to participate due to their unavoidable commitments.

“We set to organise it earlier this year because we want to resurface two tennis courts here. For now, only two courts will be renovated due to insufficient funds available,” he told reporters.

Lau also appealed to local elected representatives (YB) to provide financial assistance for renovation of the other two courts.

“So far, our funds are only enough to repair two courts as each court renovation cost is RM35,000. I hope the government and the local YBs can lend a helping hand to repair the rest of the other courts,” he added.

Meanwhile, the event’s organising chairman Adam Tiong was very grateful for the participation of the six teams including from Sarikei, Mukah and Betong.

He said the cash prize for the champion team is RM1,500, first runner-up team (RM800) and RM500 each for joint second runners-up teams.
