MUKAH: SJKC Ek Hua still needs funds to finance the construction of its new RM2 mln double-storey building.
The school’s management board chairman, Tay Aik Seng, said previously, some individuals and organisations had contributed to the building fund.
He added that besides cash, the contributions also included sand, courtesy of a local company.
“Due to the limited funds, I, on behalf of the school management board, humbly welcome contributions from the government, local representatives and the public, so that the project can be completed soon,” he said during the earth-breaking ceremony in Penakub here on Saturday (Oct 16).
The new building is located near the present one by the banks of Batang Mukah, and about 7km from town.
Tay explained that the school was built in 1927 through the initiative of a villager, Tay Kui Lin.
According to him, in the early 1980s, he and former teacher Henry Lee made an effort to construct a new wooden double-storey building.
He revealed that the school was initially known as Ek Hua Primary School, and the current pupils included Melanau and Iban.
Headmaster Ko Lai Chai said the current number of pupils was 56, including 13 pre-schoolers, as well as 12 teachers and three support staff.
